What It’s Like to Work With a Horse Photographer in El Paso

I’ve fallen in love with El Paso since moving to far West Texas in early 2021. The desert sunsets, the dust, the mountains on the horizon – it all feels like it was made for horses. Not long after we arrived, I made it my goal to become the go-to horse photographer in El Paso for riders who truly love their horses and want more than “just a few cute pictures.”

Over the last few years, my work has shifted from simple digital galleries to an artwork-first experience. Now, my greatest joy is helping you transform your time with your horse into heirloom artwork that you can enjoy every single day.

Why I Became a Horse Photographer in El Paso

Before I became a horse photographer in El Paso, I served as a combat cameraman in the Army. I’ve photographed a lot of intense moments, but nothing has my heart like the connection between a person and their horse.

Horses carried me through some really hard seasons of life. So when I photograph you and your horse, I’m not just chasing pretty light (though trust me, we’ll get that too). I’m looking for:

  • The way your horse’s ears flick toward your voice
  • The tiny smile you make when their nose bumps your shoulder
  • The way you breathe differently when you’re with them

El Paso is full of ranches, arenas, and desert trails that make gorgeous backdrops. But the real art, for me, is the relationship you’ve built with your horse.

Common Pain Points Horse Owners Have About Photo Sessions

Almost every client who reaches out to me has some version of the same worries:

  • “I’m so awkward in front of the camera.”
  • “My horse is a lovable disaster and won’t stand still.”
  • “I want to print my photos, but I have no idea what sizes or products to order.”
  • “I don’t want the pictures to just sit on my phone forever.”

If that sounds familiar, you’re in good company.

As a horse photographer in El Paso, I design the whole experience around solving those pain points:

  • I guide you on what to wear, how to prep your horse, and how to get your tack looking its best.
  • We build breaks into the session because horses have opinions and attention spans.
  • I pose you in ways that feel natural and flattering (no stiff prom-pose vibes).
  • And most importantly: I don’t just hand over a link and vanish. I help you turn your favorite images into real artwork.

My Artwork-First Process (A Peek Behind the Scenes)

My process changed when I realized so many clients loved their images… but never got around to printing them. They were overwhelmed and nervous about making “expensive mistakes.”

Now, every session is built around artwork from the very beginning.

1. Planning With the End in Mind

Before your session, we’ll talk about how you’d love to enjoy your photos:

  • A big statement piece over the couch or in the tack room
  • A gallery wall of you and your horse through the years
  • A custom album that tells your heart horse’s story

Once I know what you’re dreaming of, I can photograph with that in mind – leaving negative space for wall art, planning cohesive series for albums, and paying attention to the small details that matter to you.

2. Session Day: Fun, Flexible, and Horse-Friendly

On the day of your session, my job is to make things feel relaxed and enjoyable – for both you and your horse.

We’ll usually shoot about an hour before sunset when the light in El Paso gets soft and golden. I’ll give you gentle direction, but there’s a lot of movement, petting, walking, and laughing. If your horse needs a snack break or a chance to move their feet, we roll with it. Horses are allowed to be horses.

Many clients tell me they were nervous at first and end up saying, “That was actually fun.”

3. Gallery Reveal & Artwork Design

Instead of sending a link and saying “good luck,” we sit down together for a Gallery Reveal over Google Meet.

Here’s what happens:

  • You see your images in a curated slideshow.
  • We favorite the ones that hit you right in the feels.
  • I use special software to show you what different artwork sizes will look like on your actual walls (you just send me a quick phone snapshot of the space beforehand).
  • We design wall art, albums, or collections that fit both your home and your budget.

No guessing on sizes. No wondering if that 16×24 is too big or too small. You’ll know exactly what you’re getting before you order.

Why Artwork Matters More Than a Folder of Files

Digital images are great for sharing online, but printed artwork changes how you experience your memories.

When you hang a portrait of you and your horse where you see it every day, it becomes part of your home’s story. It reminds you of who you were in that season, the goals you chased, the lessons learned in the arena, and the quiet moments in the barn aisle.

As a horse photographer in El Paso, my goal is not just to give you “pretty pictures.” It’s to create tangible artwork that keeps your horse close to you, even when life pulls you away from the barn.
