Equine Events in El Paso and New Mexico: April
As an equine photographer and an equestrian always wanting to learn more, I try to keep my finger on the pulse of equestrian events in El Paso, Texas and the surrounding areas.
Here’s what I’ve found so far:
Spring Horse Show
La Mesa, New Mexico
April 7th and 8th
This show is a part of the State Show Horse Series. Riders will compete in cutting, boxing, and 4-H (halter, showmanship, western pleasure, ranch riding, trail, reining, hunter under saddle, hunt seat equitation, and hunt seat disciplined rail).
The horse show is being held at the Armstrong Equine Services Arena at 175 Esslinger Road, La Mesa, New Mexico 88044.
Challenge Show presented by JMJ EnterpriZes
Rio Grande Valley Ranch in Canutillo, Texas
April 15th
The show starts at 8:00 am and includes classes such as sport horse in hand, hunter under saddle, hunter hack, leadline, western pleasure, ranch rail, western trail, and carriage driving.
The winning barn gets a barn party!
April Horse Sale
El Paso, Texas
April 20th
Got a horse you need to sell? Rio Grand Classic is hosting a horse sale April 20th. Their consignment deadline is April 7th. The auction goes live at 1:00PM MST.

Cattle Drive
La Union, New Mexico
April 21st-23rd, 2023
La Union Ranch is hosting a cattle drive in La Union, New Mexico with activities including sorting, penning, roping, target shooting, dinner, music, and campfire marshmallows.
You can join the team using your horse, their horse, or join as a non-rider.

NMQHA Land of Enchantment Circuit
Expo New Mexico in
Albuquerque, New Mexico
April 21st-23rd, 2023
The NMQHA classes include halter, showmanship, western, English, ranch, driving, and speed classes. Enjoy a full weekend of showing at a fabulous arena!
Extreme Cowboy Race
Sunland Park, New Mexico
April 28th-30th
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Posse will host a clinic on Friday and they will compete Saturday and Sunday over a variety of obstacles. Their horsemanship is unmatched!
The address for the arena is 1801 McNutt, Sunland Park, NM, United States, New Mexico. The competition is free to watch.

Las Cruces Horseman’s Association Gymkhana
Mesquite, New Mexico
April 29th and 30th
Come on out to the Landmark Arena to watch riders compete in barrel racing, pole bending, flags, straight 8 barrels, and a fun event.
