Ranch Rodeo: Not Your Typical Rodeo
Over the weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to witness and photograph the Ranch Rodeo, an electrifying event hosted by MidPoint Equine Events in the charming town of Deming, New Mexico. This two-day extravaganza showcased the true essence of ranch life, featuring a range of captivating events that highlighted the skills and camaraderie of the participants. As a photographer, I was thrilled to capture the raw energy and genuine excitement that filled the arena throughout the entire weekend.
Six Exciting Events
Friday evening kicked off the festivities with a lineup of thrilling events that truly brought the spirit of ranching to life. The crowd roared with enthusiasm as cowgirls took part in barrel racing, displaying their incredible speed and agility. It was a sight to behold as they skillfully maneuvered their horses around the barrels, racing against the clock to claim victory.
Instead of barrel racing, Saturday’s ranch rodeo started off with 10 team ropers racing the clock to rope their steers.
The team doctoring event followed, showcasing the participants’ ability to rope, wrestle, and treat “injured” cattle, just as they would on a real working ranch. The adrenaline soared as the teams demonstrated their teamwork and precision in this intense and fast-paced event.
The wild cow milking event had everyone at the edge of their seats. As the name suggests, participants had to milk a wild cow – an entertaining challenge that required both bravery and skill. The excitement reached its peak as the teams made daring attempts to complete the task amidst the unpredictable behavior of the cows.
Next came the stray gathering event, which tested the competitors’ herding abilities. It was impressive to witness the cowboys expertly round up stray cattle and guide them into the designated area, demonstrating the importance of these skills on a real ranch.
Following that, the branding event showcased a significant aspect of ranching culture. Participants skillfully branded the cattle while the clock was ticking, replicating a crucial activity in the management of livestock.
The last event of the ranch rodeo is always the most exciting – the ranch bronc riding. Brave cowboys from each team saddled their broncs and did their best to stay on the powerful horses for 8 seconds.
The Allure of Ranch Rodeo
What sets a ranch rodeo apart from a traditional one is its focus on the skills that are integral to life on a ranch. While traditional rodeos are undoubtedly captivating, ranch rodeos have a unique charm of their own. They provide a glimpse into the hard work, dedication, and genuine camaraderie found in a close-knit ranching community.
Participants in ranch rodeos are not just athletes; they are true cowboys and cowgirls with practical skills used in day-to-day ranch operations. It is this authenticity that draws people in, creating an experience that resonates with both seasoned ranchers and rodeo enthusiasts alike.
